Mind the gap

After the local elections across the UK on Thursday, the media today carry analyses of the results.  From my newspaper this morning, the statistic that catches my eye is that “the turnout was estimated at 32 per cent, the lowest since 2000”.

For those of us who explore the idea that politics and religion might be two sides of the same coin, the reduction in participation in both politics and religion at the same time would not be unexpected.  However, the low participation rate in both politics and religion should (in normal times) stimulate the officers of both kinds of organisations to reflect on the gap in self-understanding between those who participate and those who do not.
