Rule of Law (6)

As a postscript to my rule of law posts last week, I find it surprising and puzzling that there is no formal requirement for UK schools to give lessons which introduce the key ideas of “the rule of law”.

What I have in mind is that young people in the UK are subject to the criminal law from the age of 14 and to the civil law from the age of 18.  Of course, aspects of “the rule of law” appear here and there at home and in school and in the media.  But is that really enough preparation to enable all young people to take an informed part in the civil society that is constituted by “the rule of law” in the UK?

I incline to the view that education about “the rule of law” is just as important as sex education (which does have a formal place in the curriculum).
